In the Behold Room I was greeted by Sam Laufer of Laufer Teknik, importer for the fabulous Behold equipment powering the now legendary Ascendo loudspeakers. The front-end handling the music was the Behold CD player and/or the Nova Physics Memory player. It was no mere accident Laufer chose Sunny cabling to complete this ensemble. Laufer's warm greeting was typical of his, non-imposing and unassuming yet informative persona. Basically, the system spoke for itself. I've heard a similar rig before (at guess whose home?). Not only did this room sound good but it attempted to reach the soul.

I'm not going to say that it could do it as faithfully as I've encountered outside show venues but I've got to admit they tried. On the other hand the Behold gear is a thing of beauty unto itself aesthetically speaking: clean and simple makes for a satisfying appearance accented by a large blue light emanating from behind its dial (after looking at it for awhile you wonder who's watching who). As for the Ascendo loudspeakers, they seem to just disappear when music is played and I became easily engulfed in their sound. Keep on the lookout for importer Laufer Teknik.
Sam Laufer of Laufer Teknik put together a wonderful sounding room with some of the most advanced audio products on the market. The Ascendo System M ($46K) loudspeakers were driven by Behold BPA768 KHz stereo amplifier ($38K ea) used in a bi-amp configuration. It has a full Class-A analogue power supply employing digital manipulation (high tech). The preamplifier is the Behold APU preamplifier ($21-66K depending on options) and the digital source was the magnificent Memory Player ($10K transport only) from Nova Physics Group.

Finally, all Supreme Series Sunny Cables were used to connect the components. CP owns the Memory Player along with the Behold electronics while we both owned the Ascendo loudspeakers, so I wasn't too surprised by the crisp articulation along with rich nuances and subtleties I heard in this setup. As like many rooms the sound of this room improved greatly by the last day due to a last minute change in wiring. Hey, if don't work...fix it!
Sam Laufer of Laufer Teknik, importer of the German Ascendo loudspeakers, the mighty Behold series of electronics and Halcyonic's active anti-vibration platforms, were in rare form at this year's event. Laufer's very delicate integration of the loudspeakers and electronics via the Nova Physics Memory Player was simply stellar sounding. Having all these components as a reference in my own home gives me another example of how important the room is. Attempting to get the sound right from this room proved an enormous undertaking. However, thanks to the internal room correction software via Behold's Audio Processing Unit (APU),

it wasn't that big of a deal once Laufer's gang (side photo Dave Bowkett and Tommy Moore) got things up and running. As good as things were initially during the beginning of the week, they got even better on the two remaining days. Using the Acoustic Dreams iso-rack and all Sunny Cabling, the room took on a rather special sound by Thursday. Knowing these electronics personally as I do, I know very well what they can ultimately provide sonically speaking. Unfortunately these designers and importers can only manage what is potentially possible under these very tough show conditions. How frustrating.
