Digital versus Analog

The Existence

of the analogue signal processing will in principle under no circumstances be put in question although the impression can arise here.

The Intension 

is rather to replace those analogue components by digital ones were this is meaningfully possible according to today's standards.

In the nearer future still essential parts in an analogue design will exist. The interface between both will, however, move more and more in favour of the digital technique.


In the Analoue Platform  

the signal processing is always limited by the finite precision, which are reached relatively fast through noise or non linear distortions.

Error Correction Methods

in the analogue signal processing are conceivable only with very big effort and mostly disproportionately and with doubtful success.

Every Analogue Processing Step

inevitably causes a signal deterioration and by that the dynamics permanently decreases and the disturbing influences increase.


The Digital Signal Processing 

also has limits, e.g. the "finite" word width and with that the quantisation. But the processors, memories and data transmission lines today available are developed enough that on the whole the quantisation has practically no more considerable negative influence. 

Another Limitation

of the digitalisation is the A/D- and also the D/A-conversion, because music is almost always produced analogue and in every case the playback is always analogue. This converting causes faults which do not exists in the purely analogue level at all. But here too in the meantime applies the same as in the case of the processors etc.: practical no considerable negative influence. 

Jitter

is already a thing of the past if sufficient know how is available schematic design part and the engineers really care for ...


The Sampling Frequency

today still remains the only bottleneck concerning the digital word width. Sampling rates of 44.1 kHz/48 kHz are undisputed far too little. 96 kHz can be a step in between only. 192 kHz (SACD) are possibly "sufficient". At behold we use 786 kHz, the fourfold of 192 kHz and with that we are completely on the safe side.

It is Certain Desirable 

to avoid the limitation of the CD from "old days" (44.1 kHz of 2 x 16 bits) and this happens indeed. But the CD is a fact and it will last very long till it will belong to the "old iron". In this case the normative strength of the facts are acting.


It is Beyond All Doubt

that digital signals can arbitrarily and practically loss-free be copied and transferred.

The User Can

of course form everything else according to his own ideas with a signal digitally on hand, e.g. tube sound, various RIAA equalizations, the right balance via delay and not via volume etc. etc ...
